The first Walton-on-the-Naze Pier was originally just 330 Feet long. It was designed by the Colchester architect Mr Penrice and opened in 1830 having cost £1,000 to construct. The amount was met by public subscription.

The all-wooden pier had numerous seats along its length and culminated in a landing stage where steam packets from London and Ipswich called during high tides.

Later lengthened (reportedly to 800 feet) the pier was eclipsed after 1871 when a rival pier was opened a few hundred yards along the promenade (the present pier).

For nine years, Walton-on-the-Naze held the record for being the smallest seaside resort to have two pleasure piers.

But in January 1880, this first pier was washed away by heavy seas along with sections of the sea wall.
