History

The first pier opened in 1854 but was destroyed in 1859. An Act of Parliament allowed the Isle of Wight Ferry Co. to build a new 2420 foot pier. Plans included a ‘chain ferry’ to Stokes Bay to compete with the existing Portsmouth/Ryde service. However, the scheme was abandoned when the Admiralty objected to chains being laid under the Spithead. Construction was completed in 1864 to a revised 970 foot design. Ryde Pier Company took over the pier in 1865 and a standard ferry service ran until 1875.

A goods tramway was added, operating from 1873 to 1880. New buildings included public baths at the pier-head and a free bathing stage near the shore. In 1876, the charge for the ‘hot and cold ozone baths’ was sixpence. These remained popular until the end of the century when they fell into disuse and were demolished.

Ryde Borough Council bought the pier for £1,000 in 1914 to acquire the right of way on Quay Road. A 1916 Act of Parliament permitted demolition and the last traces of the pier were washed away in 1924.
