History

The foundation stone was laid in 1885 and this 750 foot iron pier, designed by Galbraith Church, opened on 3rd April 1888. The structure replaced an older, wooden pier. The new pier had shelters and a pavilion. Throughout the summer, ferries ran to Clarence Pier, Southsea.

King Albert of Belgium landed here during World War One.

In 1932, the pier was damaged by fire. It was sectioned in 1940 for defence reasons. After the Second World War, Captain Cutler attempted to keep the Cowes ferry service operational by using an ex-RAF rescue launch. However, when Cutler left the area, the service was discontinued.

Ownership passed to Gosport Council who received compensation for damage caused during the War. It was hoped that the money would be spent on reconstructing the pier and restarting the ferry services, but the money was spent elsewhere and the pier was demolished in 1958.
