History

In 1861, the West Cowes Pier Company Ltd. received authorisation to build a pier on property owned by Charles Middleton Kernott, the major shareholder. The original plan was for a 350 foot timber pier.

Work began in November 1866, and according to the 1871 ‘Hampshire and Isle of Wight Directory’, the 250 foot long pier contained a 60 foot wide landing stage, pagoda, ballroom, refreshment bar and a stage from which to view regattas.

However, on 28th September 1876, a storm (locally described as a tornado) damaged the pier and its pagoda and bandstand beyond repair. The remains of the pier were removed in 1882.
