History

According to “The Engineer” of 13th September 1878, the design engineer was Thomas Cargill although locally, J.W.Grover is credited. The contractor was G.W.Hutchinson.

The pier was constructed opposite the Moot Hall between 1876 and 1878, although the original plan was to site it further south. It was intended to be 567 feet long with seventeen equally spaced spans. However, construction stopped when the pier was less than half complete.

It was subsequently damaged by a drifting vessel and was later demolished. The final two piles were removed when the sea wall was built. Main demolition probably occurred in the 1880s. At a council meeting on 9th November 1908, it was recorded that “the council must demolish the rusting old pier head which disfigures the Crag Path.” It is likely, therefore, that the site was finally cleared the following year.
