One of Britain’s most iconic seaside piers could be forced to shut after racking up enormous debts. Lions Hastings Pier Ltd has gone into liquidation owing up to £300,000. Among the creditors are gas and electric companies, former employees, a bank, a council and several small businesses.

The owner of Hastings Pier in East Sussex says the structure is not for sale despite the company which runs it entering liquidation. The only named director of Lion Holding Limited is businessman Abid Gulzar, who owns the freehold. “I’m in charge. I will do it,” he said.

Roker Pier suffers storm damage
Roker Pier, in Sunderland, was damaged by huge waves and 60mph winds during the storm, which lashed the grade II listed pier. Several metres of railings were washed away while sections of deck around the lighthouse were also washed into the sea, leaving it unsafe to open.

Ryde Pier becomes part of biodiversity project
Marine scientists from the University of Portsmouth have swum beneath Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight to attach large metal cages to the structure. Also known as BioHuts, the cages contain oyster shells and hessian rope and will be monitored for signs of marine life inside. It is hoped the scheme will encourage juvenile fish to set up home inside them, so populations can increase.

Hythe Pier railway track restoration is underway
Hythe Pier Heritage Association is restoring the first 45 metres of track on the 640-metre pier – the seventh longest in the UK. Rails that had been in place for decades have been lifted and old sleepers at the shore-end station have also been taken up.
