Clacton Pier’s SeaQuarium is set to close for good next month after bosses were faced with having to move it to enable it to meet new standards. Despite a glowing report from a government vet at its last inspection, pier bosses said the costs of complying with new rules for zoos and other wildlife attractions would have been too great.

‘Forged by Flame’ sculpture is still planned for Eastbourne Pier
The chosen sculpture, Forged by Flame, is an object made from materials reclaimed from the fire including thousands of charred two-pence pieces. The cash to build it was allocated from a £2 million pot to boost tourism. EBC confirmed money remains earmarked for the sculpture. Now it’s a case of finding the right location so that the pedestrianisation can showcase the sculpture in the best way possible.

North Somerset Council has been awarded £234,761 of National Lottery Heritage Fund cash towards the repair and regeneration of the Grade II* listed pier. The grant follows £3.55m in government funding awarded earlier this month. The funding from the government’s National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) will be spent on saving the “legs” of the pier. It will also reinstate access to the island.
