Renovation work delayed at Shotley Pier
There are hopes the revamped Shotley Pier could soon be welcoming guests after being hit by a series of delays including supply chain issues. The group behind the major renovation of the derelict pier saw their original plans delayed by the Covid pandemic, then the revised opening in May this year was kicked back thanks to a combination of issues caused by Brexit, global supply issues and shortage of delivery drivers.

Four years ago campaigners started the long process of raising enough funds to save it. Together, the community managed to get together a huge £500,000. Work to restore the Victorian structure back to its former glory started last summer, using reclaimed Greenheart timber – the hardest wood in the world. So far, far one-sixth of it has been revamped.

The tribute shows will take place on October 31 at 2pm and 7.30pm and money raised will go to the neuro intensive care unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, a cause that was close to his family’s heart for the treatment he received there.

‘HMS Leigh’ opens to the public this weekend
During the Second World War Southend Pier was taken over by the Royal Navy and was renamed HMS Leigh and was closed to the public on September 9, 1939. The famed pier will reopen at 10am on Saturday, September 25 to HMS Leigh ‘The Bravest Pier in the World’ event ticket holders.

The all-star studded tribute to Joe Longthorne MBE has aptly been named ‘A Night to Remember’ and takes place on Saturday, with organisers inviting many of the entertainer’s showbiz pals including Roy Walker, Denise Nolan, and Viva’s Leye D Johns. Argyll and Bute Council has published details of a possible bid to the Levelling Up fund, which aims to support smaller transport projects, town centre and High Street regeneration, and cultural and heritage assets. The new Southend Pier trains have now arrived and are set to be opened to the public soon. The new carriages were spotted on the seafront.
