Brighton’s Green Party MP Caroline Lucas cut the ribbon to officially open #StarlingsRoost, the South Coast’s only dedicated starling observation post, complete with clever see-in-the-dark camera under the Pier, enabling starling fans to observe a live feed of the birds roosting on a huge screen, as well as being streamed online on the Pier’s website for starling enthusiasts around the world to enjoy.

Repairs at Weston Birnbeck Pier estimated to be £16 million
Taxpayers will not be asked to help pay for an estimated £16m repair project to bring an historic pier back into use. North Somerset Council has agreed to buy Birnbeck Pier in Weston-super-Mare from its current owners CNM Estates. The Victorian pier is in need of significant repairs and it is hoped that it could reopen to the public within five years. “We can’t have a drain on council tax payers resources,” said councillor Mark Canniford.

Thousands of people lined Weston’s seafront as the Grand Pier’s Fireworks at Sea event returned for the first time since the Covid pandemic. Filmmakers were seen shooting a new production on the picturesque setting of Saltburn Pier. They are filming a short called ‘Möbius’ Trip’ which will be shown on various streaming platforms. A description of the film on the company’s website described it as a short and said it is “a mind-bending action thriller”.

A new television advert features a number of recognisable landmarks. The advert for Freesat, a free-to-air satellite television service, features two CGI crabs on their journey from the bottom of the ocean and onto land. The crabs, which are called Ossi and Pod, spend the afternoon playing games on Brighton Palace Pier and going on the rides.

Santa’s grotto with a difference at Southend Pier!
A now disused railway carriage that once carried visitors up and down Southend’s iconic pier has been brought back into use. The small unit has been placed at the pier head and will be first used this weekend as a shelter for the Santa on the Pier event. The carriage used to form part of the diesel-run train called ‘Sir John Betjeman’ which had been in operation since 1986.

Council buys Weston Birnbeck Pier
Birnbeck Pier in Weston-super-Mare will be bought by North Somerset Council and see the RNLI return to it. The council said it was a “significant milestone” and step towards welcoming the public back onto a “stunning piece of architecture” again. The restoration work will be carried out over several years and will be funded by the council, The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), Historic England and other grants.

Not literally! The Ferris wheel on Llandudno Pier will be taken down to become a “billboard” for the town at a popular Christmas market in Yorkshire. As the cold weather comes in and fewer people visit the promenade, the wheel has been disassembled and will be taken to Sheffield’s Christmas market until January.

Llandudno Pier Pavilion site sold to Llandudno Pier
Tir Prince Leisure Group confirmed the purchase of the site following “many months’ worthwhile meetings” with developer Alan Waldon. The group said the purchase would guarantee the future of Llandudno Pier, which Mr Williams previously claimed was at risk of closure if controversial plans for 58 flats at the Pavilion site were given the go-ahead by Welsh Government ministers.

A ticket to Ryde on new rolling stock!
The Isle of Wight’s first passenger train has arrived at Ryde Pier Head station, after ten months of work on Island Line’s tracks. The much-awaited newly refurbished rolling stock replaces the old-style tube trains that used to run between Ryde and Shanklin. Improvement and accessibility works and a new passing loop have also been added, to the tune of £26 million.

Ten-year plan to return Colwyn Bay Pier to ‘former glory’
Plans are being prepared to return a pier to its former glory with hopes it would benefit the entire community. Colwyn Victoria Pier Trust (CVPT) is preparing plans to enhance the truncated pier in Colwyn Bay by creating a new venue for events, family-friendly attractions and facilities. The aim of the project is to build upon the work recently completed by Conwy County Council and to further develop and extend the pier by restoring it to its former glory, with the trust saying they want to “offer a 21st-century solution that benefits, visitors, residents, and the business community”.
