The Southend Pier Museum Foundation Trust held a celebration for the museum’s milestone. The museum, located next to the pier, in Western Esplanade, was officially opened by the late councillor John Armitage, the then mayor of Southend, on July 8 of 1989.

Southsea South Parade Pier transformation complete as new boat deck opens!
South Parade Pier has just rebuilt its boat deck – the final part in a series of works to restore the Southsea landmark after it was reopened in April 2017. The £200,000 project will now offer mooring for boats as well as allowing people to fish on the new deck, which was completely removed in 2014 due to storms.

Blackpool South Pier owners in court over asbestos incident
The owners of a famous seaside pier put the public’s health at major risk when they demolished an asbestos-lined arcade – while locals and holidaymakers were allowed to roam nearby. Asbestos fibres from Blackpool’s South Pier were allowed to float along the Promenade, and people were allowed into the arcade where the work was being done.

The rebuild of Colwyn Bay Pier begins!
Contractors have started preparatory work to build the truncated pier at Colwyn Bay. The lower part of the promenade has been closed and fencing has been erected so that sand blasting work can take place on the columns, and groundworks can be carried out.

People were queuing down Cleethorpes Pier for the great Papas £1 fish and chip giveaway. Scores of people were taking advantage of the offer which is being held as Papas raises money for charity. Staff are donating every penny to Children in Need.

A new sculpture is set to be installed on the popular pier as part of a major art trail across the UK. It comes after plans to introduce a steel artwork, which would act as a memorial for local fishermen, was given the go-ahead.

Further progress at Colwyn Bay. At only 45 metres it will be the second shortest pier in the UK, but we’ll be cherishing every inch!
On Monday, the lower part of the prom was closed and fencing has now been erected around the site so sand blasting work can take place on the columns. Work to prepare the ground ready for the new structure is also being carried out. The structural steelwork is expected to be delivered to the site in January.

New book explores the Hove Pier that never was
Brighton-born author Kevin Newman’s new book Brighton and Hove: Unique Images from the Archives tells the story of how Hove seafront could have looked very different. While the plans for the West Pier were in motion in the 1860s, separate plans were drawn up in 1864 to build Hove its own pier. The planned pier was set to be decorative rather than a pleasure pier.

A test pilot has set a new world speed record by flying in a jet suit at 85.06mph alongside Brighton Pier. Mr Browning, the founder and chief test pilot of Gravity Industries, which designs, builds and flies jet suits, said: “I’m really very pleased, very chuffed – it’s the fastest I’ve ever been, even in training. Having Brighton Pier there, flying by an iconic landmark was really special”.

Harwich Haven Authority has removed the Ha’penny Pier’s innermost pontoon, positioned under the gangway, as part of investment into the Haven. This is the last of three sections to be refurbished at the pier, as the other two pontoons have been revamped in the past few years.

Eastbourne Pier closed after hotel fire
The former owner of the fire-damaged Claremont Hotel and Eastbourne Pier boss Abid Gulzar admits he cried when he saw the building alight on Friday morning. But five days on, Mr Gulzar says he is now concerned he is unable to reopen the pier and does not know how much longer it will have to remain closed.

Plans for Totland Bay Pier revealed!
It’s understood the 1880 site is expected to re-open to the public in 2021 -since its closure in 1980 after deemed “unsafe” for public use. According to Charlie, the aim is to build an independent, stand-alone, rustic-style restaurant at the end of the pier, with 120 covers and open all year round.
