The pier is the shortest in the UK and was the first concrete structure of its type in Europe. It was built just before the First World War but had a large amount of repair work done during the summer of 2020. The fire has left the rear of the pavilion severely damaged.

Bosses at the pier are to create a new all-weather community space at the seaward end of Grade 1 listed pier. The space underneath the cafe in the Japanese style pagoda is currently used as a walkway down to the landing stages for passengers to board visiting boats such as The Waverley paddle steamer. Now, under the ambitious plans, a temporary floor is to be installed to turn it into a ‘pop up’ space which can be used for activities such as dance classes, yoga sessions and art exhibitions.

Island Line railway operates between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin, serving Smallbrook Junction, Brading, Sandown and Lake stations. It carries around 1.5 million passengers in a normal year. In a statement, the operator said: “We had been aiming to reopen the Island Line in the first half of next month, but flash flooding has added uncertainty to our programme”.

Burnham Pier reopens after fire
The pier reopened to the public with a section of the amusement arcade cordoned off due to fire damage in the roof. A fire service spokesman said: “The incident was scaled down and the fire took place at the back of the amusement arcade. There was 50 per cent fire damage to the building.”

Historic England has said more could be done to improve the proposed £10 million transport interchange scheme. It suggested Wightlink’s plans to regenerate the tramway pier into a pedestrian and cyclist pathway should be swapped with the main Ryde Pier. It says cars should go up the currently run-down pier with pedestrians able to ‘promenade’ on the main walkway.

Weston resident Paul Hobbs completed the UK’s first marathon to be completed entirely on a pier, according to the National Piers Society. Paul said: “I am delighted to be part of a historic event – I was not even aware that this would be the first-ever marathon carried out on a pier before.” A fundraiser was created for the event which aimed to raise a target of £5,000 for the British Heart Foundation. Changes are once again coming to Southend Pier, as the council prepare to strengthen the pier itself. Heavy machinery is in place ahead of construction which is set to new support piles, steel beams and bracing in place. Wheel in motion at Llandudno Pier!
A Ferris wheel is set to be erected on Llandudno Pier as part of plans to “reinvent” the landmark as a night-time attraction and promote it around the UK. The 69-foot wheel has been custom-made for the promenade to the tune of almost £1million. The traditional wheel will have 18 gondolas carrying six people each, painted all-white and fitted with modern lighting that will make it highly visible after sunset.

Hythe Pier gains listed status
The 700-yard pier – said to be the seventh longest in the UK – has been awarded listed building status by Historic England. The move will help Hythe Pier Heritage Association (HPHA) secure the funds needed to refurbish the pier and its narrow gauge electric railway. A HPHA spokesperson said: “Listing marks a building’s significance and celebrates its special architectural and historic interest. It brings specific protection so that its special interest can be properly considered in managing its future.”
