This talk will examine the seaside pier before Eugenius Birch created the new iron jetty at Margate in the 1850s. It will describe how existing coastal structures were adopted for promenading by visitors to resorts by the early 19th century and how this prompted the construction of the first piers and jetties designed with those holidaymakers in mind.

Dr Allan Brodie is a Visiting Fellow at Bournemouth University. He is the author of England’s Seaside Resorts (2007), The Seafront (2018) and England’s Seaside Heritage from the Air (2021), as well as books on Margate (2007), Weymouth (2008), Blackpool (2014) and Weston-super-Mare (2019). He also published Tourism and the Changing Face of the British Isles in 2019, a broad view of how tourism has impacted places. Allan has also contributed an introductory essay to Anthony Wills and Tim Phillips’ book British Seaside Piers. Swindon: English Heritage (2014) and has co-authored an Historic England Research Report on Birnbeck Pier (2022).
