Council considers the future of Falmouth’s Prince of Wales Pier
Falmouth mayor Steve Eva said that the Truro and Falmouth Harbour’s Board, which is responsible for the pier, had given three options for its future. “The chairman of the harbour’s board admitted it had a responsibility to run a facility for the people of Falmouth to be used by boats,” he said. “Therefore they have to do something. “They basically wanted to know whether the people of Falmouth wanted to knock down the pier and replace it or knock it down and don’t do anything or repair it.”

Owners seek to reopen Lowestoft Claremont Pier deck
The pier itself, a 60-metre stretch of wooden decking, has been closed to the public since 1982, with only seagulls making use of it in recent years. But now, after four decades of desertion, Mr Llewellyn says reopening the pier is a “high priority”, and is already in talks with a company regarding a surveyor’s report, but admits finances will dictate the speed at which the project progresses.

Visitors to Cromer Pier’s Pavilion Theatre will soon be able to enjoy an upgraded bar and restaurant thanks to a £45,000 boost. Councillors on North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), which owns the pier, voted to give the money to Openwide Coastal, which runs the theatre, as well as to extend the company’s contract by five years.

More than 24,000 visited the pier last month, the highest ever number recorded in January since records began. That number more than tripled the previous record set in January, and was also double the amount of visitors at the pier in December. The 700ft long Edwardian pier has now been reduced to 3ft 6in in length but retains some fine detailing of the structure’s trolley railway and the complex landing stage at the end. A new attraction has opened at Skegness Pier where children can play a version of paintball and laser tag called Gelly Ball. Unlike paintball, this is marketed as a game that does inflict any pain and is played inside. Gelly Balls are shot from Gelly Blasters, which holds around 750 rounds and can be fired without reloading.

Owner Russell Bolesworth has applied to Tendring Council for proposed minor external alteration, including construction of a new rear extension. The blueprints show the existing nine ten-pin bowling lanes could be replaced with adventure golf and that a new six-lane bowling area would be built, alongside escape rooms, a children’s soft play area and a new food and drink area.
