New ‘truncated pier’ at Colwyn Bay opens!
Cllr Abdul Khan, Conwy Council chairman, opened Colwyn Bay Pier to the public. He said: “It is with great pleasure that I open the pier today. Due to Covid restrictions we can’t have the big community celebration we’d have liked, but it’s still important that we mark this day and this connection to Colwyn Bay’s seaside history.” He added: “By constructing this pier we acknowledge the legacy of the Victorian engineers and also provides a focus for people to relive their many happy memories at this site.”

The gigs have been labelled as ‘Summer Sessions’, with the first concert due to take place on Saturday. Thanks to volunteers from Aspire Ryde, a herb garden is now flourishing at the end of Ryde Pier. Disused planters have been brought back into life by the charity to brighten up the Pier and support biodiversity. Once the herb garden is established, commuters will be welcome to pick a few herbs on their way home to use when preparing meals.

Part of the Isle of Man’s Queen’s Pier has reopened to the public for the first time in more three decades. Hundreds of people attended a ceremony for the opening in Ramsey. Work to restore the Victorian structure was entirely funded by donations and carried out by members of the Queen’s Pier Restoration Trust.

Delay for new trains at Southend Pier
The installation of the new electric pier trains, which were scheduled for a summer 2021 launch has been delayed due to an issue with paint sourced by the contractor, Severn Lamb. The delay means the new trains are now not expected to arrive until September 2021.

New cafe opens at Clevedon Pier
Clevedon Pier has launched its Glass Box Café which will offer residents panoramic views of the pier and a takeaway menu.
The café opened to the public on July 21, serving a gourmet seaside menu with some seaside classics such as fish and chips from the grade one-listed structure. Clevedon Pier’s manager hopes that visitors are able to take in the “spectacular views” when dining with the Glass Box Café.

Ryde Pier scraps car toll
A toll to drive on to the country’s oldest seaside pier is to be abolished, ferry operator Wightlink has announced. Drivers currently pay £1.30 to access Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight before taking the FastCat passenger service to Portsmouth. The 207-year-old listed structure costs around £250,000 a year to maintain.

Postcard failure sees Weston Grand Pier relocated to Plymouth!
Postcards of Plymouth in a WH Smith store in the city have been removed after it emerged pictures on the postcard were not of Plymouth. Mr Barton said he thought the bottom right image was Weymouth, in Dorset, and the top right was Weston-super-Mare, in Somerset. In a statement, a WH Smith spokesperson said: “We apologise to customers in our Plymouth store for this error”.

London’s leading river bus provider, Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, will be running a special Saturday service this August.
