National Piers Society releases Pier Sustainability Toolkit
The National Piers Society, working in conjunction with Bournemouth University and Blackpool Council has published a major new study on seaside pier sustainability. The ‘Pier Review: Sustainability Toolkit for British Seaside Piers’ was funded by The Coastal Revival Fund and provides insight into the best models of pier operation and management to ensure the long-term sustainability of our seaside piers.

April fool: Bangor Pier to become a bridge!
Not everyone is in favour of the new plans, with one local resident complaining: “If the Pier is extended over to Anglesey it would then become a bridge and it could no longer be called a pier, so for that reason I’m against it, it‘s always been known as Bangor Pier.”

An EGG-cellent gift from Clacton Pier to local children
Clacton Pier has announced that about 300 children will be receiving Easter eggs over the coming weekend. Staff ordered large haul of chocolate treats to give away to youngsters, but the current coronavirus lockdown meant that they were left wondering what to do with the eggs.

New log flume at Clacton Pier ready to make a big splash when pier reopens!
Billy Ball and his brother Elliot, who own the popular pier, have been working on the project with a small in-house technical services team – while maintaining social distancing measures under the current guidelines.
Mr Ball said: “Part of the 15 metre high ride is visible from the seafront, but no one can see the entire structure as we are in lockdown like every other attraction. So, we thought we would reveal this first sneak preview of what it looks like and what our customers can look forward to at the appropriate time.”

Hythe Pier train remains on track with a £10,000 grant!
The £10,000 has come from the Beaulieu Beaufort Foundation, a charity that supports local organisations and individuals. HPHA chairman Peter King said: “This is a great start to our funding campaign to support the restoration of historic and much-loved pier railway”.

Stunning photo of Brighton Palace Pier makes photography awards shortlist
The breathtaking image of Brighton’s Palace Pier illuminated at dusk was captured by photographer Stephen Tomlinson. Mr Tomlinson said: “I headed to this iconic location for sunset and waited for the attractions at the end of the pier to light up. The resulting image is quite abstract, with the funfair appearing almost like a giant pinball machine.”

Weston Grand Pier turns blue in support of NHS and key workers
A spokesman for the tourism board has stated the Grand Pier on Weston’s beachfront has invested in blue lighting in support of the NHS and “the wide range of people who are supporting those in need”. The Grand Pier will continued to be illuminated in blue every evening. The Grand Pier remains closed to visitors.

Drones used for Clevedon Pier structural survey
The survey, carried out by local company DroneSurv, was done earlier this month at a low Spring tide. The survey revealed the structure, which celebrated its 150th birthday last year, was in good condition. Bosses at the Clevedon Pier and Heritage Trust now plan to use drones to carry out the survey each year.

Papa’s Fish and Chips at Cleethorpes Pier offer click and collect service. An inspired way to keep trading and keep people safe
The restaurant launched its new click and collect service after repeated requests for them to open their business up again. Dino said “A big worry of ours was that we could end up with a long queue of people waiting to collect their food, so we have limited the number of orders we are doing. We are only delivering to people who have a car and once customers have parked up, a staff member will place their order into their boot in order to avoid any human contact.”

A statement from Waverley Excursions Limited said: “Waverley now has her two new boilers in place and some work is continuing on the boiler refit but at a much-reduced pace owing to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. “For this same reason we haven’t published a 2020 programme. We don’t know whether we can welcome passengers on board in 2020”.

Clacton Pier plans NHS appreciation party for when the lockdown ends
Staff at Clacton Pier are looking to stage the event once they are able to re-open the attraction and restrictions have been lifted by the Government. The event will also include a ‘firework extravaganza’ to ensure it’s a memorable occasion. Every year the Pier’s staff arrange a weekend for the emergency services and armed forces, but they felt this time it was important to do something special for NHS workers.
