Plans to repair Helensburgh Pier
Argyll and Bute Council has applied for planning permission to carry out work on the structure, which has been closed for more than a year on safety grounds because of concern over its deteriorating condition. It was estimated in April that comprehensive work on the pier could cost up to £1million, while in July it was suggested that it could be included in plans for the new waterfront leisure centre.

Councillors turned the bid down on the grounds the ride “would detract from the character and appearance of the Prom” including the setting next to the pier. The location also contravened policies which strictly control where funfairs can be placed. Blackpool Pleasure Beach also objected to the planning application, saying the ride in its current location could undermine its own operation and possibly affect jobs.

Eastbourne Pier reopens 10 days after hotel fire
An Eastbourne Borough Council spokesman said: “While the main cordon around the Claremont Hotel remains in place with a section of the seafront road closed, access to the pier has been reopened.” Demolition is planned for the hotel soon.

North Devon Council is hoping to remove two 1950s ticket kiosks from the entrance of Ilfracombe Pier, which it owns and manages. The kiosks, which the council said were in a “poor condition”, would be replaced by a new archway on one side while the road would be widened on the other side.

The 1930s Queen Mary building has been removed so that work can take place to lay the foundations for improvements to the outside fun fair. The future of Weston-super-Mare’s derelict Birnbeck Pier is to be discussed in the New Year – after its owners failed to comply with a repairs notice. North Somerset Council, working with Historic England, issued the owner of the crumbling pier, CNM Estates, with a repairs notice in September. The notice ordered the company, headed by Wahid Samady, to carry out a series of ‘necessary repairs’ to the landmark.
